4 out of 5 stars

If you live in Miami and have had the pleasure of reading Truthwitch don’t miss the author Susan Dennard tomorrow at the Coral Gables Books & Books @ 7pm!

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
When: Wed., February 24 @ 7pm
Where: Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables, FL 33134

I happened to be at my favorite local bookstore, Books & Books, this last Saturday for the South Florida Bloggers’ Februrary meetup. My favorite things in one place, books and bloggers! This is where I found out from Ketsia, Books & Books’s children’s book buyer, that Truthwitch author Susan Dennard would be there in person! I’d heard a lot of buzz about Truthwitch and Ketsia was kind enough to give me a copy so I could see it for myself. Trust me, Truthwitch is worthy of all the buzz surrounding it.

Truthwitch hooks you in with it’s very first sentence, “Everything had gone horribly wrong.” It’s quite the first sentence and I find some books don’t live it up to such powerful statements but I’m happy to say that Truthwitch totally delivered! By pg 29 I was already charmed by the main characters, Safiya and Iseult. As you may already know by now, I love stories with strong female characters and this book did not just have one but two leading ladies. Safi and Iz are trained bad-ass warriors and witches. I love their loyal sister-like relationship and their witty banter.

I also liked that the world building was easy to follow. I have a hard time with intricate world building, to me, it ends up detracting from the storyline. I didn’t have that problem at all with Truthwitch. The characters, feuding empires and great destined heroes were all woven beautifully in this book. I also liked the heavy tension romance that prevailed through the whole book.

My only complaint is that books 2, 3 and 4 are NOT out already. This book is SO good I read it in a day. Had the rest of the series already been out, I’m pretty sure I would’ve not left my house the whole weekend.

Happy reading!

Book Review #16: Soulless

soulless-gail-carriger-book-coverWelcome to our sixteenth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. This is a special episode as it is the first show with a guest! We welcome Amy from Reel Pages Bite (reelpagesbite.com) to review Soulless by Gail Carriger. Soulless is the first book of the series The Parasol Protectorate. We love this series. It’s one of our favorite paranormal romance book series. This steampunk novel is set in London during Victorian times. The main character, Alexia Tabarotti is a preternatural, which means she is soulless in a world where supernatural creatures have excess soul. Her state of lack of soul also gives her the power of neutralizing supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves. As long as Alexia maintains contact with supernaturals, they become human. Alexia gets tied up in a murder investigation and vampires seem to be appearing around London without being claimed by a hive or trained in social etiquette. Alexia must navigate these dangerous waters and deal with the unrefined alpha of the London Pack Lord Maccoon.

Gail Carriger develops a cast of amazing characters that will leave you wanting to know more about them. We recommend this book and series with a resounding YAY! Let us know what you thought! Book Review # 13: Moon Called

moon-called-patricia-briggs-coverWelcome to our thirteenth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we talk about Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. Moon Called was the first paranormal romance I ever read. It introduced to me to the genre and I fell in love. So if you haven’t read a shifter romance and are interested in trying it out – this is the perfect book to get you started. Mercy Thompson is a native walker that can turn into a coyote. She was raised by the leader of all the werewolves in the US. She is a mechanic that specializes in European vehicles and knows martial arts. All of a sudden werewolves are being made in the tri-cities of Washington State without pack training. This means someone is up to no good. When the alpha of the tri-cities (and Mercy’s neighbor) gets abducted along with his daughter, Mercy is forced to rescue them. She will have to deal with Fae, Vampires, and Werewolves. We love Mercy Thompson and recommend this book with a YAY! Let us know what you thought! Remember to leave us a comment, we love hearing from our readers/viewers. If you found a book you love because of our recommendations or share an absolute love or hate for a book, tell us! For any comments or questions please email us at books(at)dapperanimals.com

Book Review # 12: Magic Bites

magic-bites-ilona-andrews-coverWelcome to our twelfth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we talk about Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. Ilona Andrews delivers a fantastic paranormal novel with shape shifters, necromancers, magic, and vampires. The story takes place in Atlanta in a time where technology or magic can take over the world in a moment’s notice. When a magic wave hits, cars and electricity malfunction, while magic and magic powered objects become more powerful. The plot revolves around the murders of several shape shifters, humans, vampires and Kate Daniels’ own guardian. This kick ass heroine has to deal with the most powerful shape shifter in the area, Curran, to solve the case. Curran is dangerous and sexy so Kate will have to tread lightly during her investigation. If you are looking for a great action book with great sexual tension between characters – this is it. We give this book a big YAY and recommend the rest of the series as well. Let us know what you thought! Remember to leave us a comment, we love hearing from our readers/viewers. Book Review # 8: Coveted by the Bear

Coveted-by-the-bear-by-t-s-joyce-coverWelcome to our eighth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we talk about Coveted by the Bear by T.S. Joyce. This a bear shifter romance novel that gets our recommendation: YAY! After reading the terrible mess of Bearllionaire we were skeptical of all bear shifter books. However, Coveted by the Bear was a great read with well developed characters and storylines. This book is set in a small town that has turned its back on a teenage girl whom they’ve nicknamed Crazy Mira. Read the story of how Mira tries to get her life back and falls in love with a werebear. Book Review # 7: Bearllionaire

Bearllionaire-by-terry-bolryder-coverWelcome to our seventh episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we talk about Bearllionaire by Terry Bolryder. This is a pretty bad book; but it is so bad that you laugh at it throughout. The story is so ridiculous and the character development so dismal, yet I enjoyed this train wreck of a book. You know how ugly dogs are so ugly you think they are cute? This book had a similar effect on us. If you are looking for a quick (no brainer) read by the pool, then this might be a good pick. However, if you are looking for a good shifter/paranormal romance book, this is not it. Don’t read this as your first book in the genre or you will be disappointed. We are curious to hear what you thought about it. Remember to leave us a comment, we love hearing from our readers/viewers.
