Book Review #22: Armada by Ernest Cline

Let me start of with, I loved Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s first novel. Why am I starting with his first book? So I don’t feel like such a d*ck for crapping all over Armada. It’s not a terrible book, but after such an amazing debut novel, Ready Player One, you can’t help but feel disappointed with Armada. The characters weren’t very well developed so I felt no emotional connection to them. I also had a hard time getting into the story. The whole book just felt rushed. However, it is well written and there were a couple of times that I chuckled out loud. I personally liked how he described the invading alien’s speech/language.

Armada was chock full of videogame and 80’s references but without the charm of Ready Player One. The references just fell flat in Armada and felt more like a gimmick. Maybe if you’re a hardcore video gamer you will get more out of this book. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.
