Book Review #20: The Girl’s Guide to the Apocalypse

Book Review of The Girl’s Guide to the Apocalypse by Daphne Lamb.

First of all, I love the title of this book. It’s what made me want to read it. I was expecting our heroine to be this kick-ass woman and that wasn’t the case. At least not in the beginning. The main character, Verdell, is a selfish, sarcastic, underachieving office worker. Honestly, she’s a real asshole. She’s barely surviving the apocalypse and seems to be getting by on pure, dumb luck. And still, she is one of the nicest people in this book. She still retains a shred of human decency whereas the rest of the characters have lost all their marbles when the apocalypse hit.

If you can get over the hurdle of Verdell not being the usual cookie-cutter good guy, I think you will enjoy this book as much as I did. I loved the over the top, ridiculous scenarios where it seems that no one has noticed that the world has ended. Verdell is the only one that is still keeping things in perspective. Everyone else is still holding on to their silly rules and routines like gluten-free diets, office hierarchy and social media bullying. This book had me laughing out loud several times and I loved Verdell’s sidekick, her boss Robert. Robert, who lives strictly by the rules of his old company’s risk management manual and constantly threatens Verdell with her upcoming employee review. It was a great, fun read and I look forward to more work from Daphne Lamb.

We had mentioned in our video review that The Girl’s Guide to the Apocalypse will be published Sept 1st but it is already available 🙂

Happy reading!

Book Review #19: One Con Glory

One Con Glory by Sarah Kuhn

One Con Glory by Sarah Kuhn is a fantastic geek romance book. It is a short and wonderful read about geek writer, Julie. We follow her on  her quest to find her childhood comic book heroine figure, Glory Gilmore. The main character is smart, funny and you root for her all the way. It’s such a great book that my sister and I mention in the video review that it would be a great movie. After a quick google search, I’ve found out it is being made into a movie! It is full of nerdy and nostalgic references. However, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get any of the nerdy references you’ll still enjoy the book. If you love comics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Comic-Con, great female geek characters and happy romantic endings you will love this book.

Happy readings!

Book Review #16: Soulless

soulless-gail-carriger-book-coverWelcome to our sixteenth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. This is a special episode as it is the first show with a guest! We welcome Amy from Reel Pages Bite (reelpagesbite.com) to review Soulless by Gail Carriger. Soulless is the first book of the series The Parasol Protectorate. We love this series. It’s one of our favorite paranormal romance book series. This steampunk novel is set in London during Victorian times. The main character, Alexia Tabarotti is a preternatural, which means she is soulless in a world where supernatural creatures have excess soul. Her state of lack of soul also gives her the power of neutralizing supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves. As long as Alexia maintains contact with supernaturals, they become human. Alexia gets tied up in a murder investigation and vampires seem to be appearing around London without being claimed by a hive or trained in social etiquette. Alexia must navigate these dangerous waters and deal with the unrefined alpha of the London Pack Lord Maccoon.

Gail Carriger develops a cast of amazing characters that will leave you wanting to know more about them. We recommend this book and series with a resounding YAY! Let us know what you thought! Author Event: Meg Cabot @ Books & Books

alignright coco-izzie-selfie-meg-cabotCoco and I had the pleasure of seeing Meg Cabot at Books & Books last night. She was everything you would expect her to be, charming, funny, and very entertaining. We had a blast! It was great to see several of the people attending wearing tiaras in honor of the Princess Diaries 🙂 If you have a chance to see Meg Cabot at your local bookstore don’t miss it, you’ll love meeting her in person.

I first discovered Meg Cabot’s books about 10 years ago at the public library and quickly fell in love with them. I read all of the boys series, The Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl and Every Boy’s Got One; and  the Queen of Babble series. I started reading mainly the adult series, but the one I really got hooked on and has a special place in my bookworm heart is the Mediator series which is more of a YA paranormal/romance. And finally after several years, Meg Cabot is releasing the next Mediator book, Remembrance, and it’s going to be an adult book! Yes! Ahhh, so many books of hers to look forward to. But right now, her most recent book  is Royal Wedding.

Royal Wedding is also an adult book based on the YA Princess Diaries. For some reason, this is the only Meg Cabot series I have not read. I’m excited about reading the Royal Wedding but a little wary because I did not read all the other Princess Diaries books. Well, we’ll definitely let you know what we think of Meg’s latest book. We’ll be making a video review of Royal Wedding as soon as we finish it 🙂

Happy readings!

Book Review # 9: How to Build a Girl

how-to-build-a-girl-caitlin-moran-coverWelcome to our ninth episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we talk about How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran. This is a moving coming-of-age story of a girl growing up in a small town in England. We fell in love with the quirky main character, Joanna, as she battled her raging hormones and insecurities. Joanna’s over the top personality and life motto “fake it til you make it” leads to the creation of her alter ego Olivia Wilde – a reviewer working in a rock magazine. This is book is definitely worth your time! We highly recommend it if you are into British bands of the early 2000s or like great stories. Let us know what you thought! Book Review # 2: The Spellman Files

the-spellman-filesWelcome to our second episode of our video podcast the Izzie & Coco Book Review Show. In this episode we will discuss one of our all time favorite books, The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz. This is the first book of a fantastic series that we cannot recommend enough. Debra, a good friend of ours, recommended it to us a few years back and we fell in love. The book is about a kooky and dysfunctional family of private detectives that are unable to separate work from their private lives. The plot revolves around solving a couple of mysteries but what will have you asking for more Spellman adventures are the characters. I hope you read the first Spellman Files and gobble up the entire series just as we did. Don’t forget to please participate, we love hearing from our readers/viewers. If you found a book you love because of our recommendations or share an absolute love or hate for a book, tell us! For any comments or questions please email us at books(at)dapperanimals.com

Our next book selection is Romancing The Duke by Tessa Dare. We will be posting our review next week!
