I happened to be at my favorite local bookstore, Books & Books, this last Saturday for the South Florida Bloggers’ Februrary meetup. My favorite things in one place, books and bloggers! This is where I found out from Ketsia, Books & Books’s children’s book buyer, that Truthwitch author Susan Dennard would be there in person! I’d heard a lot of buzz about Truthwitch and Ketsia was kind enough to give me a copy so I could see it for myself. Trust me, Truthwitch is worthy of all the buzz surrounding it.
Truthwitch hooks you in with it’s very first sentence, “Everything had gone horribly wrong.” It’s quite the first sentence and I find some books don’t live it up to such powerful statements but I’m happy to say that Truthwitch totally delivered! By pg 29 I was already charmed by the main characters, Safiya and Iseult. As you may already know by now, I love stories with strong female characters and this book did not just have one but two leading ladies. Safi and Iz are trained bad-ass warriors and witches. I love their loyal sister-like relationship and their witty banter.
I also liked that the world building was easy to follow. I have a hard time with intricate world building, to me, it ends up detracting from the storyline. I didn’t have that problem at all with Truthwitch. The characters, feuding empires and great destined heroes were all woven beautifully in this book. I also liked the heavy tension romance that prevailed through the whole book.
My only complaint is that books 2, 3 and 4 are NOT out already. This book is SO good I read it in a day. Had the rest of the series already been out, I’m pretty sure I would’ve not left my house the whole weekend.
Hello! Just got back from our October Geek Girl Brunch meetup and I’m still giddy from all the fun we had. We had a fantastic time and was lovely to see so many of the attendees in costumes. Each time we go, we always meet great new people 🙂 This month’s meetup was held at Earls Kitchen + Bar in Dadeland Mall. Below are more pictures of this awesome event.
Elsie and Aurora, thank you again for organizing such a great event. I’m always look forward to the next one <3
p.s. Meli, we missed you! Congrats on your beautiful baby girl, Luna 🙂
This past Sunday we had the pleasure of attending South Florida’s Geek Girl Brunch. It was such a blast! Geek Girl Brunch is a meetup group of ladies who geek out together, typically when mimosas are involved. Our GGB was held in Dania Beach at the Bad Boys of England pub. An appropriate location for the Dr. Who theme of this month’s brunch. The atmosphere was great and the company was even better. We met the most lovely geeky ladies and had a great time geeking out over our favorite shows, movies and books. We also received some great swag! Pictures below of all the free goodies we got and lovely women we met 🙂
Last week I attended our biggest comic convention in South Florida, Supercon. It was exciting to see how much it has grown over the years. We are really proud (and grateful) of founder Mike Broder for starting this event. I still remember attending his smaller events back in 2006 and thinking it was nice to have our own smaller version of San Diego Comic Con in South florida. Now our local convention has grown up big time. Last year over 40,000 people showed up to Supercon and I can only imagine the numbers were greater this year. The isles were super packed!
What I love most about conventions is that you can meet other cosplayers and geek out in a friendly atmosphere. You can approach strangers that are advertising their love for The Fifth Element, Totoro, steampunk, Adventure Time, etc. – and those strangers will also want to connect with you. What other situation breaks down the barriers of approaching complete strangers like this? I can only think of comic conventions.
I also discovered some amazing new artists at Supercon this year. Check them out below.
Coco and I had the pleasure of seeing Meg Cabot at Books & Books last night. She was everything you would expect her to be, charming, funny, and very entertaining. We had a blast! It was great to see several of the people attending wearing tiaras in honor of the Princess Diaries 🙂 If you have a chance to see Meg Cabot at your local bookstore don’t miss it, you’ll love meeting her in person.
I first discovered Meg Cabot’s books about 10 years ago at the public library and quickly fell in love with them. I read all of the boys series, The Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl and Every Boy’s Got One; and theQueen of Babbleseries. I started reading mainly the adult series, but the one I really got hooked on and has a special place in my bookworm heart is the Mediator series which is more of a YA paranormal/romance. And finally after several years, Meg Cabot is releasing the next Mediator book, Remembrance, and it’s going to be an adult book! Yes! Ahhh, so many books of hers to look forward to. But right now, her most recent book is Royal Wedding.
Royal Wedding is also an adult book based on the YA Princess Diaries. For some reason, this is the only Meg Cabot series I have not read. I’m excited about reading the Royal Wedding but a little wary because I did not read all the other Princess Diaries books. Well, we’ll definitely let you know what we think of Meg’s latest book. We’ll be making a video review of Royal Wedding as soon as we finish it 🙂
